Group 2 Success For Charyn At Sandown

The Roger Varian trained 4-year old Charyn maintained his unbeaten start to the year with a hard-fought but ultimately decisive victory in the Gr.2 Sandown Mile yesterday. Trained by Roger Varian for Nurlan Bizakov, son of Dark Angel won the Gr.2 Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte at two and was third in the Gr.1 St James’s Palace Stakes during an ambitious campaign last year. Appreciating the drop into Listed company on his reappearance last month, he ran out a ready winner of the Doncaster Mile, but looks ready to be tested at the highest level again. Not the sharpest from the stalls, he was ridden towards the rear of the six-runner field by Silvestre de Sousa as Pogo made the running. The leader was reeled in by Poker Face with a furlong and a half to run but four-time Gr.1winner Lord North and Charynwere just beginning their efforts wider on the track. Charyn launched a decisive attack inside the final 110 yards to win by a length and a quarter, with Poker Face a neck ahead of Lord North in third. Now the winner of four of his 13 starts and over £400,000 in prize money, he is set to be targeted at the Gr.1 Lockinge Stakes at Newbury on the 18th of May.

Bred by Grangemore Stud and a 250,000gns Book 2 yearling purchase by Sumbe, Charynis a full-brother to the Gr.2 Mill Reef Stakes winner Wings Of War. They are out of the Listed-placed Kodiac mare Futoon, whose dam is a full-sister to the Gr.2 Mill Reef Stakes winner Galeota.
