Charyn Powers Clear To Another Top Level Group 1 Success
Nurlan Bizakov and Roger Varian’s star colt Charyn produced a red-hot performance to win the Gr.1 Prix Jacques Le Marois on a sweltering afternoon at Deauville yesterday. With Haatem having been taken out of the race on veterinary advice moments before the off, the field for the €1m contest was reduced to seven, with the son of Dark Angel sent off favourite ahead of Inspiral, who was bidding for a standalone record third successive win in the Gr.1 feature for John and Thady Gosden and Cheveley Park Stud. However, as the gates opened, the defending champion was slowly away and lost several lengths, with Ryan Moore having to roust her along to join the main field, which was led by regular front-runner Big Rock. Silvestre de Sousa had settled Charyn in second position and, running past the 500m pole, had cruised to the front going best of all. The grey quickened up smartly in the final 200m and went further clear, winning impressively by three lengths from Gr.1 Poule d’Essai des Poulains winner Metropolitan, whilst Inspiral did well to be placed finishing a head behind the runner-up in third.
This was a fourth win of the season from just five starts for Charyn, whose only defeat came at the hands of Audience in the Gr.1 Lockinge Stakes in May. The progressive colt has taken his from to a new level this year and followed up his maiden Gr.1 win in the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot with an even more authoritative victory yesterday. This was also a second Gr.1 of this summer’s Deauville meeting for Bizakov, with the Kazakhstan-born businessman having already tasted Gr.1 success with Lazzat in the Prix Maurice de Gheest. After the race, he said:“
Charyn is a champion. I’m sure that he’s the best miler in Europe. The Gr.1 Prix de Moulin on 8th September is one option. The Gr.1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot in October is another.”
A delighted Roger Varian added: “It was quite an straight forward race to watch. Charyn is incredible and seems to be improving all the time. He’s magnificent. He’s really relaxed in the morning, although it’s sometimes difficult to know where you are with him on account of his build[keeping him fit]. However, his temperament makes life very easy for me. He really has an exceptional mindset. I hope he stays in top form and that we can enjoy him for a little longer. “Where he goes next has not yet been decided. As was the case with the Queen Anne Stakes, the winner of this race is guaranteed an invitation to the Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Mile. We’ll take it from there. It’s always good to be invited to this race. Having said that, we can also toy with the idea of running him in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot. He acts in any ground and we really like that option.”
Bred by Guy & Serena O’Callaghan at Grangemore Stud, he is a full-brother to the Gr.2 Mill Reef Stakes winner Wings OfWarand is the second winner out of the Listed-placed sprinter Futoon. Grangemore Stud offer his full-sister at Tattersalls October Book 1.
Charyn’s sire Dark Angel is enjoying a sublime season having registered his 4th Group 1 winner and 127th Group winner this season and 17 individual Group 1 winners overall.
